Scott addresses parliament

Scott Morrison was first elected to the Commonwealth Parliament as the Federal Member for Cook on November 23, 2007 and is currently the Shadow Minister for Productivity and Population and Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship.

Scott was first appointed to the Coalition frontbench in September 2008, as Shadow Minister for Housing and Local Government, and later took on the additional portfolio of Shadow Minster for Infrastructure.

During his first term in Parliament Scott was also promoted to Shadow Cabinet in December 2009, to the role of Shadow Minster for Immigration and Citizenship, where he played a key in the 2010 federal election campaign, successfully prosecuting the Coalition’s case on border protection and immigration issues.

Following the 2010 election, Scott was promoted again, taking on additional portfolio responsibilities for Productivity and Population.

As a senior member of the Coalition’s frontbench Scott has taken a leadership role in national debates and policies that that have resonance in the Shire.

As well as his work as the Member for Cook on local issues, Scott has served on a series of parliamentary committees that have reported on support for carers, housing, electoral reform, productivity, interest rates and monetary policy, these include:

  • Deputy Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters
  • Member of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health and Ageing
  • Member of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Family, Community, Housing and Youth
  • Member of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics
  • Member of the Joint Statutory Committee on Public Accounts and Audit

Scott also participates in various parliamentary groups and associations including as co-patron of the National Student Leadership Forum and in 2009 established the bi-partisan Mateship Trek initiative with friend and colleague Hon Jason Clare MP, Federal Member for Blaxland.

The Mateship Trek brings together local young people from the Cook and Blaxland Electorates, with vastly different cultural backgrounds, as well as other members of parliament, to walk in the footsteps of our veterans of the various conflicts and actions in which Australia’s defence forces have been engaged. In 2009 the Mateship Trek ventured to Kokoda and in 2011 to Malaysian Borneo to retrace the Sandakan POW death march.

The Mateship Treks are held very two years. Their purpose is to raise awareness of the sacrifice of our defence forces amongst younger generations, foster understanding between young Australians of different faiths, race and cultural background and raise funds for the villages and communities that supported our troops overseas during their time of greatest need.

One of Scott’s greatest delights is that as a local member of parliament, welcoming students from our Shire schools to Parliament House and see our future leaders show such a strong interest in our democracy.
