Local Federal Member for Cook, Scott Morrison attended the launch of the Livewire program at Sutherland Shire Hospital today, which provides free and safe online communities for families affected by a serious illness, chronic health condition or disability.
Livewire is a secure, moderated on-line community tailored to the needs of its members. Livewire chat hosts and moderators are trained in adolescent health, and are online seven days a week to ensure that Livewire remains a supportive and fun place to be.
Livewire provided Sutherland Hospital with a specially designed hospital bedside trolley, with laptops and a wireless internet connection to allow patients to access the Livewire from their bedside.
“Thanks to everyone involved in bringing the Livewire Hospital Program to the Sutherland Shire. Any initiative that helps our children, particularly those who are going through tough times, deserves our support,” Mr Morrison said.
“It is fantastic to see the community rallying around to help support young people who often experience challenges based on their illness or disability and their treatment regimes. These challenges can often lead to feelings of isolation, boredom and a lack of control over their daily lives.
“With access to chats, blogs and forums, Livewire will help provide invaluable support for individuals and families going through similar challenges,” Mr Morrison said.
Livewire is supported by funding from the Starlight Foundation, Optus and the Federal Government’s Clever Networks program, which was introduced by the Howard Government in 2005.
Any young Australian aged over 10 to 21, who is currently living with a serious illness, chronic health condition or disability who wishes to join Livewire or find out more information should visit www.livewire.org.au or contact member.services@livewire.org.au.
