Australia’s contributions at the G7
Under Prime Minister Morrison, Australia was invited for the first time to attend the G7 Summit in August 2019. Bringing together the world’s largest developed economies, the G7 Summits present an opportunity to put forward Australia’s views on global challenges.
At the 2021 G7 Summit, Prime Minister Morrison contributed to discussions on climate change, health cooperation, and economic recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Prime Minister Morrison addressed the G7-plus dialogue in Cornwall (UK), stating that without technological transformation in member countries, global ambitions for climate action would be compromised. The Morrison Government advocated for a low emissions technology partnership aimed at fostering advancements in hydrogen production and solar energy.
Prime Minister Morrison also raised the issue of global vaccine distribution during the Summit. He underscored Australia's role in providing COVID-19 vaccines to Pacific Island nations and discussed the need for a coordinated global response to health crises. The Morrison Government committed 20 million doses to the G7 Vaccine Initiative — reinforcing Australia's position as an active player in the international community.
Prime Minister Morrison also raised concerns about China's actions that went against international rules and order. He highlighted the strong security cooperation between Australia, India, Japan, and the United States — also known as the Quad. This iteration of Australia’s position promoted stability and collective security efforts in the Indo-Pacific.
Through active participation and advocacy at G7 Summits, Prime Minister Morrison both protected and advanced Australia’s national interests on the world stage.
