Australian Secretary-General of the OECD

Prime Minister Morrison played a vital role in securing the appointment of the Hon. Mathias Cormann as Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The Morrison Government actively supported Cormann's candidacy, recognising his extensive experience as Australia's Finance Minister from 2013 to 2020.

On 8 October 2020, Prime Minister Morrison officially nominated the Hon. Mathias Cormann for this prestigious position, highlighting his qualifications and the importance of having an Australian voice in a key global organisation. The nomination was well-received by OECD member countries, reflecting Cormann's reputation and experience in international finance and economic policy.

The selection process for Cormann's appointment began in August 2020 and involved a rigorous evaluation by OECD member nations. On 15 March 2021, the OECD Council formally appointed Cormann as Secretary-General, marking him as the first individual from the Indo-Pacific region to hold this position. His appointment was seen as a significant achievement for Australia on the global stage.

Upon taking office on 1 June 2021, Cormann expressed his commitment to enhancing the OECD's role in addressing global challenges such as economic recovery post-COVID-19, climate change, and taxation policies. His vision aligned with the Morrison Government’s priorities, which included fostering economic resilience and promoting sustainable growth.
