Boosting Australia’s cyber defence capability: Project REDSPICE
On 29 March 2022, the Morrison Government announced Project REDSPICE — Resilience, Effects, Defence, Space, Intelligence, Cyber, and Enablers. REDSPICE is a $9.9 landmark investment over a decade to enhance the capabilities of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) and bolster Australia’s resilience against increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks.
A key aspect of REDSPICE was its focus on advanced threat detection and response. By integrating cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, REDSPICE sought to improve the identification and mitigation of cyber threats. This proactive approach was designed to allow the ASD to detect vulnerabilities and respond effectively before significant damage could occur. The initiative also aimed to triple the ASD's offensive cyber capabilities and double its persistent cyber-hunt activities — enhancing Australia's strategic advantage in cyberspace.
REDSPICE encouraged partnerships between government agencies, private sector organisations, and international allies to foster a collective defence against cyber threats. This collaborative framework was essential given that cyber threats often transcended geographical boundaries. By sharing threat intelligence and best practices, REDSPICE aimed to create a more robust cybersecurity ecosystem across Australia.
Recognising that human expertise is critical in cybersecurity, the investment planned to create 1,900 new jobs, including for analysts and technologists, and build a resilient cybersecurity workforce capable of adapting to evolving threats.
The announcement of REDSPICE marked a significant shift in Australia’s approach to cybersecurity. It reflected an understanding of the urgent need for enhanced measures in light of rising global cyber threats. By investing heavily in both technology and human capability, the Morrison Government safeguarded critical infrastructure and sensitive information vital to national security.
